Sixteen years ago, Rockstar announced Agent. The new IP never got finished, but it’s still on our minds

Announced back in 2009 as a PlayStation 3 exclusive, this stealth action game never actually got released. Instead, all we’re left with are rumors and a whole lot of what if.

Did you know that somewhere between Agent, a stealth action title set during the Cold War era revealed on June 2, 2009, during Sony’s E3 show. Yes, it’s been sixteen years and a day since then and we still haven’t forgotten.

The canceled game that still sticks with us

Developed by Rockstar North (the same team behind was abandoned in 2018, and now all that’s left is the E3 announcement and some leaked concept art pieces.

In 2023, former Rockstar dev the posts were eventually taken down – pretty clear Rockstar would rather keep this private.

All we know is that Agent was meant to be a 1970s Cold war spy thriller, featuring locations like a French Mediterranean city, a Swiss ski resort, Cairo, and culminating in a space battle. The game was going for a more linear experience (James Bond vibe, naturally), different from Rockstar’s usual open-world style.

Even though they worked on it for over a year, progress was slow. The team had to cut entire levels like Cairo and the space section to try to simplify things. In the end, with Rockstar focusing on GTA IV and GTA V, they shifted resources away from Agent. The project supposedly got ed to another Rockstar studio, but it never got finished. The official website went down in 2021, and by then, some of us were still holding out hope that maybe the game would one day finally see the light of day.

You can still find a few traces of Agent out there. About a year ago, a leaked map and some underwater screenshots popped up. But that’s really it, nothing more. Considering all the development headaches and the cuts the game went through, it’s probably for the best that it got canceled instead of ending up half-finished and disappointing us. Rockstar chose to put their full focus on GTA V, and well, we all know how that turned out. Still, it’s a bit of a shame Agent never made it to the finish line.

Been with gamepressure.moviesx.org since 2019, mostly writing game guides but you can also find me geeking out about LEGO (huge collection, btw). Love RPGs and classic RTSs, also adore quirky indie games. Even with a ton of games, sometimes I just gotta fire up Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley, KOTOR, or Baldur's Gate 2 (Shadows of Amn, the OG, not that Throne of Bhaal stuff). When I'm not gaming, I'm probably painting miniatures or iring my collection of retro consoles.
