Songs of Conquest is a fantasy strategy enriched with RPG elements. The player must both manage the kingdom and lead the team as they explore the game world and perform their tasks. In addition, there are tactical battles and the whole game takes place in the turn-based system.
Songs of Conquest is a turn-based fantasy strategy game that draws on the iconic Heroes of Might and Magic II. It is a debut project of the Swedish studio Lavapotion, assisted by Coffee Stain.
The game presents the story of a conflict taking place in a fantasy land. The story is made up of several intertwining threads. The faction of swamp creatures Rana fights against the oppressors and strives for independence; whereas the human country Arleon tries to cope with the plague of the undead, who are led by the dead empress. All campaigns must be completed to experience the full story.
Songs of Conquest is a turn-based strategy game. The player takes on the role of a ruler, whose task is to take control over the fantasy land. To do this, we have to develop our kingdom, take care of the economy, recruit armies and use a wide selection of spells.
The most important element of the game are battles. Our armies have a certain number of soldiers, which they can accommodate. It depends on the skills of a general, called a Trustee, and on technologies that we will develop. We can also upgrade our troops, provided that we have the appropriate buildings. Strengthened in this way units usually acquire special skills that can be useful in battles.
Before the battle the player has the opportunity to deploy troops on the map. It's best to place troops on elevated terrains, because these provide them with bonuses. The battle is turn-based. The order in which the troops move is determined by initiative. If you don't feel like leading the battle personally, you can hand it over to the AI.
As already mentioned, the troops are managed by the Trustee. This character has magical powers that can soldiers during the battle. To cast spells you need an essence. There are several types of essence. It is obtained from soldiers and special buildings that can be taken over on the campaign map.
Magic is not the only way to troops, however. The Wielder also adds strength to the troops ively. He does this by using items and his own skills, which increase with each level. The gameplay is enriched by RPG elements, which require directing characters who explore the world, complete tasks and acquire treasures.
To build a powerful army a good economy is also necessary. In order to do so, we have to expand our country. We do it by taking over settlements, mines and collecting valuable things on the world map. Exploration also takes place in turns.
The settlements we take over are of different sizes. This is extremely important, because in each settlement you can build a limited number of structures - the bigger the settlement, the more of them it can accommodate. Therefore, you have to plan your development very carefully.
We pay for recruitment and construction with various resources. The basic currency is gold, but there are also other resources, which we obtain from treasures and mines scattered around the map.
Songs of Conquest offers both single player and multiplayer modes.
One of the most interesting elements of Songs of Conquest is the graphics. It was made in a retro style full of large pixels, and the image is embellished with dynamic lighting effects. Thanks to this the whole gives less static impression than typical 2D games.
