Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country takes place 500 years before the events depicted in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The main protagonist of the game is Jin, the antagonist of the previous game. The expansion sheds a new light on this character and it enables the players to explore the legendary Torna continent about which they could have only heard in the base game. During the adventure, the players encounter new characters and they visit many unique places. Because the expansion is a prequel, it can be played by everyone and the knowledge of events depicted in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 isn’t required.
The gameplay mechanics weren’t greatly changed since Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The game is a classic RPG in which the action is presented from a third-person perspective. The combat system wasn’t changed as well. The playable characters are accompanied by Blades – the living weapons that provide various special skills and attacks. During the adventure, the players are exploring new locations and cities of Torna, where they are fighting previously unseen enemies.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country at first glance looks same as the base game, but thanks to the new locations and the unique environment of Torna, the veterans will encounter various surprises. The game features many new dialogues, cutscenes, and music.

A fantastic standalone prequel to the excellent Xenoblade Chronicles 2 that is held back by one really annoying design decision.

In case you're curious Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna - The Golden Country does mostly work as a standalone RPG, like a sort of pointed gateway for the daunting series. You might not pick up on some of the relationship-centric nuances or worldbuilding cues, but as long as you're paying attention you'll be able to piece that together.

Torna ~ The Golden Country marks a wonderful send off to the world of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 with its cast of likeable characters, compelling narrative and a revamped combat engine that feels even better than the original. Having spent more than 150~ hours in the world of Alrest combined through the two titles, I can't help but feeling that I still want more- a desire that serves as undeniable proof to the excellence of this series.
