Master Strike is a technique that you can learn at an early stage of the game in KCD 2. It involves executing a perfect counterattack to the enemy's strike. On this page of the guide, you will learn where you can learn this technique and how to use it.
Where to learn the Master Strike?
After finishing the prologue and talking to the beggar, a side quest called Combat Training I will appear in your journal. The indicator will direct you to the nomads' camp, where you will find Tomcat, a combat master and a teacher.
It is recommended to complete both Combat Training I and II quests as early as possible, although not immediately after the prologue. Before you go to Tomcat, try to get basic equipment (e.g. during the first Where to go first?.
Upon reaching the nomad camp, look for a small arena and a man with a mustache, hanging around. After a short conversation, Tomcat will agree to give you a few fencing lessons for free. Jump into the arena, where you will receive a training sword.
The first part will consist in learning attack combinations. The basic combo is as follows:
- Strike from above;
- Strike from the right;
- Strike from the left.
After each blow, the weapon changes its position, so move it to where you want to launch the attack. Look out for the related hints, such as the delicate white glimmers on the direction rose, which will suggest from where you should launch your next attack.
How to beat Tomcat in KCD2?
Once you master the combinations, you can challenge Tomcat to a duel. He is not an easy opponent, but that's why it's worth ing a few tips:
- Perform a block or dodge as soon as the fight begins. Tomcat strikes the first blow very quickly;
- Do not try to perform long series of attacks. Focus on well-aimed, single strikes to unprotected parts of the body;
- A good opportunity to attack is the moment just after Tomcat changes his grip of the sword;
- Use the shield and focus on blocking incoming strikes;
- The arena is quite cramped, but try to use the space wisely. Keep Tomcat at a distance, approaching only at the moment of attack.
Before the duel with Tomcat, save your game. If you fail, you can always load the previous save and try again.
How does the Master Strike work?
A Master Strike involves launching a counterattack at the moment when the enemy is already executing their attack. Look out for a green shield icon, the appearance of which will mark the time frame when you can perform the counterattack. That's the same moment when you can perform a perfect block.
Keep in mind that a Master Strike MUST be executed from the opposite side than the enemy's attack. If the enemy attacks from the left, perform a counterattack from the right. If they attack from above, attack from below and so on. If you don't attack from a correct direction and at the right time, the Master Strike will not work.
It's also worth mentioning when you're the one exposed to the opponent's counterattack:
- If you attack from the same side where the enemy's sword is, you'll risk having your attack perfectly blocked.
- Attacking from the side opposite to the enemy's sword increases the chances of delivering a Master Strike.
A Master Strike is not easy to execute and requires a good sense of timing. Additionally, it can only be performed using a sword (or a sword combined with a shield). No other type of weapon will work.
In return, a well-executed Master Strike cannot be blocked. A guaranteed successful attack can also be a perfect opportunity for you to launch a deadly combination of strikes.
